Cape Camino

Overview

Route 1: Riebeek Valley

Route 1 of Cape Camino begins in the beautiful Riebeek Valley, approximately 1 hour from Cape Town, and offers a 5–7 day multi-day walking pilgrimage through vineyards, olive groves, working farms and historic mission stations. This Wine Valley Camino route follows quiet gravel roads and farm tracks, with distances ranging between 9km and 20km per day. The landscape includes sweeping valley views, the foothills of the Kasteelberg mountains, and sections along the Berg River. Accommodation is hosted by local farming families and small guesthouses, creating an authentic rural walking experience.

The Riebeek Valley Camino is considered one of the gentler Cape Camino routes, making it ideal for first-time pilgrims or walkers seeking a slower, reflective journey. Terrain is mostly flat with occasional steady climbs, and seasonal fruit orchards line parts of the route. Walkers can choose between Camino Lite and Camino Plus packages, with options for 5-day or 7-day itineraries. Route 1 can be walked independently or combined with other Cape Camino routes as part of a longer pilgrimage experience across the Western Cape.
